My Students

"Education is not the learning of facts, but the training of the mind to think." Albert Einstein. I believe that every student is capable of learning, it is just a matter of showing them how to take new information and applying it elsewhere. It is my job to ensure that each student does just that.

I teach remedial reading to grades K-3.

I help students who are struggling to read on grade level by identifying the areas where they are weak and strengthen them through intense instruction on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension. The students I work with come from homes with little academic support. Often these students do not have someone at home to listen to them read. The class sizes at our school are large. We have 26 to 32 students in each and four to five teachers per grade level. It is my privilege to help support the classroom teacher and work with students who are below grade level in small groups through in-class support or pull-outs. The students I work with enjoy participating in hands-on reading activities and getting immediate feedback as they read.

My Project

This year was my first year as a reading interventionist. It is is also the first year that I primarily focused on reading and working with small groups. As the year progressed I jotted down materials that will support the work I'm doing in the classroom. The materials I am requesting will provide my students more hands-on opportunities for working with words while using magnetic letters, boards and wipe-off markers. The sentence strips and charts will be used by students to motivate them to write and apply the skills as they practice them.

Although the list of materials I am requesting seem like basic school supplies, they are materials that will enhance my students experience as they work with words, stay engaged, and feel immediate success throughout the school year.

I have already seen a positive difference in my students who were struggling this year and I hope that as I can continue to learn about what works best for students, it is my hope that I can help them learn they can do anything they put their mind to.
