Engaging Students with Multicultural Books and Supplies

My Students
My school serves students from K through 9th grade. I have a diverse classroom with students coming from a variety of ethnic backgrounds. Our students come from a variety of living situations including foster families, single parent families, and families with two parents at home.
I have students who have difficulty making it to school on time, as well as students who have difficulty staying focused on their learning due to situations outside their control.
It is important for me to make sure my classroom is a warm, safe, and caring environment for my students. Some ways to do this is to make sure I help them feel included and make sure they have the supplies they need.
My Project
I am requesting watercolor paints, crayons, glue, and paper. These supplies include multicultural materials, so all students can be represented with their artwork. Additionally I am requesting basic classroom supplies, so every student can have the materials they need to be successful.
My students enjoy choosing independent reading books from our classroom library.
The books I have chosen will appeal to my students and increase the diversity of our library. In addition, these books and other supplies will increase the welcoming atmosphere of our classroom, thereby increasing engagement by students in their learning.
