This is the belief of teachers and staff at my elementary school in rural South Carolina: we believe that each student is special and unique and deserves an individualized education. Therefore, as a literacy coach, I help teachers incorporate small-group instruction in their guided reading lessons. Students receive reading instruction on their levels. Just like Goldilocks and the Three Bears, students read books that are "just right" for them - not too hard and not too easy.
However, the problem with working with a small group of students is finding engaging and educational activities for the other students to complete independently. Through the use of literacy workstations, students practice and master skills and concepts previously taught. To make sure that students are actively and purposefully engaged during literacy workstations, teachers need to make sure that the materials in the workstations are new and exciting. The use of workstations is an excellent way to support the curriculum, reinforce essential skills, and it provides motivating, interactive learning experiences.
I have requested various workstation kits and supplies including the Wheel of Words Game, Word Family Pocket Chart Activity, Magnetic Tub of Letters, Spin & Learn Reading Games, Reading Skills Bingo Series, Spin & Play Phonics Practice Game, Teaching Tiles Reading Center, and a Roll & Read Word Family Game.
