My Students
After attending a District training the evening before, I told my students that I had a surprise for them later that day. A month prior I had told them about all of the digital technology classes that I had registered to take, and had shown them examples of the technology. When they heard that there was a surprise, they excitedly asked if it was the robots. Later after lunch I pulled out the Ozobots. First, I explained how to care for them, and the basics of how they operated. Next, I gave the students their first challenge to solve.
The students eagerly formed their groups and began the challenge.
They practiced using the Ozobots and testing their ideas about how to accomplish the challenge I had given to them. As I walked around the room I could hear them talking with each other about what they were doing, showing their classmates what they had figured out so far.
My Project
Sometimes they would stop me to tell me about ideas they had, or problems they were facing. When something didn't work out as they had thought, it was a great opportunity to teach Growth Mindset, that when something we try doesn't work, we don't give up.
As I observed my students during this first lesson, I saw how engaged they were in their own learning.
They were asking questions, problem solving, and collaborating with their peers to solve the problem. Since then, they ask me repeatedly for the opportunity to work on an Ozobot challenge again.
We would love to have some Ozobots in our classroom all the time. That would allow students to continue to work on challenges throughout the year, as we continue our classroom focus on STEM.
