Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from Puerto Rico, Russia, Ukraine, The Dominican Republic, Columbia, Bangladesh, Mexico – lands far and wide. Some are pushed by the fear of violence, some are pulled in the hopes of seeking a better life for their children. Most arrive to double and triple up with family members. The children don’t understand why they were pulled from their homes, their friends, their pets. They only know they are in a foreign place, seeing foreign sights and hearing a language they don’t understand. These are my students.
My students may be from different places, but they all have one thing in common; they are typical teenagers.
They want to fit in. They want to be accepted. They want to make friends. One strives to become a doctor, the next a police officer, another a teacher. Like all teenagers, my students have dreams. My role is to help them see the possibility of achieving their dreams.
My Project
These books and activities will help engage my Middle School newcomer students in the joy of reading. I'm an English as a New Language teacher in a low-income middle/high school in the Bronx. Like many school districts, we are feeling the effects of years of budget cuts. We are also doing our best to learn. Your kind help will allow my students to explore different reading material at their level of understanding. Graphic Novels allow my students to see pictures as they discover new English vocabulary. The activities on Teachers Pay Teachers provide access to vocabulary and grammar development.
More than half of students from low‑income households
