This project will purchase a class set of the critically acclaimed book The Hate U Give written by Angie Thomas. This book engaging book is a great text for resistant or struggling readers, but also has complicated themes and events to engage higher skilled students as well. We will keep the book in class and read it together as a community.
My students are mostly Black, Brown, and Filipino, and we live in a community with a history of police violence, so the text is relevant to their lived experiences.
Many of them have also seen the movie, so it will allow them immediate access to the characters and themes. My hope is that reading a book so close to their interests and experiences will help them discover the joy of reading.
