My students need engaging materials to help them learn. I have many children who are struggling readers and having audio headsets will help keep them focused on reading!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach 75 fifth graders in a low income high needs school in the Bronx. Because the school only opened 5 years ago, this will be the first fifth grade class, which means no previous materials are available for our use. My students come from a diverse background and some have only entered the country within the past year. Not all of them have access to the materials needed to help them reach their full potential. When children have to worry about conditions at home, school should be safe space for learning exploration, which is most often achieved through reading!
My students deserve adequate literacy skills that will help them succeed years beyond leaving my classroom.
This can only be accomplished through instilling passion and knowledge during their most critical years of learning. The children in my classroom are worthy of interesting and engaging texts that will not only provide an outlet for tough times, but lessons for years to come!
My Project
This project will address multiple areas of my classroom. It will help keep kids engaged and help me be an effective educator! It includes books that my students love, technology for the classroom, and resources for the teacher. "Hatchet" is a read aloud in my class, which most children love! However, there are some students who have trouble focusing in a whole group setting. Giving them a head set and CD to listen to will help keep them focused and prevent them from distracting others! Students prove their understanding of what they've read by writing about it. The "Writing Strategies" book has been highly recommended by many colleagues to help children become stronger writers.
