My Students

I teach a sixth grade advanced literacy class with some of the most bright students I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. This group of children truly have a love for literature that is not found in most kids their age. On our first day of class, I told them we would start every day with free reading time, and to my surprise they all started applauding with excitement. For them, reading is fun and learning is an adventure.

It has been my goal, as their teacher, to continue their excitement of literacy by showing them many new novels throughout the year.

I run our class with a series of novel studies that center around student discussion to deepen their understanding. I wish everyone could see how incredible these class discussions can get, as these students have extraordinary insight on each topic. These students truly are up for academic challenges and are always willing to push themselves.

The classroom environment we have is centered around the genuine care my students have for one another. When they come to their literacy class, they can know it is a safe space for them to be themselves and speak their mind.

My Project

For our next novel study, we will be reading a literary classic, The Phantom Tollbooth. Through this book we will be focusing on learning figurative language, which is a core literacy skill for 6th grade. In this class we are able to truly dive into our literature because the students love to read and are always willing to challenge themselves. We read books as a whole class, in small groups, and individually on a regular basis. I am wanting a class set (26) of The Phantom Tollbooth so the students will be able to engage in the book in many different reading settings. They will be expected to read this book both in class and at home.

In order to help my students engage with their reading in an exciting way and make their reading experience more personal, I want my students to annotate in their book as they read.

To be able to annotate, each student will need to have their own individual copy that they get to keep. I believe that taking notes in the book as they read will add to their comprehension, help them make better connections to the story, and it is an important literacy skill they will use in the future.
