This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a speech therapist working in the school district, I have the privilege of supporting students with special needs, including those with autism and various learning disabilities. Every day, I am inspired by their resilience, creativity, and unique perspectives. These students may face challenges in communication and social interaction, but they also bring incredible strengths, such as problem-solving, curiosity, and a desire to connect with the world around them.
One of the key areas where my special education students need support is in understanding basic money concepts and practicing social skills, such as turn-taking.
These are not only academic skills but also life skills that will help them become more independent and confident. For students with autism, understanding abstract concepts like money can be particularly difficult, as they often benefit from hands-on, concrete learning experiences. Similarly, learning disabilities can make mastering these foundational skills a slower process, requiring repetition and engaging activities.
The goal of this project is to provide interactive materials that will make learning about money and turn-taking more accessible and fun. Through games like "Allowance" and child-friendly books like "What is Money?", my students will have the opportunity to practice important life skills in a safe and supportive environment. These materials will help them connect academic learning to real-life situations, making the concepts more meaningful and easier to retain.
What makes my students special is their individuality. They are all different, and that diversity is what makes our classroom vibrant and full of potential. This project will give them the tools to succeed at their own pace, while also building essential social skills that will benefit them both in school and in the community.
