Engaging, Inspiring, and Informative NF Text for my LEARNERS!
Help me give my students an opportunity to read about an up-to-date experience that will inspire and promote empathy and encourage perseverance. This would be a great addition to our non-fiction/Informative unit.
Several years ago a young soccer team and their coach headed into a cave for an afternoon adventure, and within hours they were trapped by rising waters! What would they do? How would they survive? Who would come to their rescue? This inspiring story of perseverance, dedication, and innovative thinking would capture the world's attention- as well as the 6th-grade learners in my beloved middle school classroom!
Within the pages of this narrative non-fiction story my learners will be introduced to a seemingly ordinary group of kids, and their daring team of rescuers - with breathtaking photographs, heart-stopping descriptions, and real life-or-death passages that will immerse and inspire the readers - as we take the journey to light and life with the Wild Boars!
In the past few years, we have used a magazine article version of this dramatic rescue operation, and the students have LOVED it! They were engaged, inspired, asked so many questions, offered their solutions, made predictions, etc. and I have been waiting for the opportunity to add a classroom set of the hardback text to expand this story into our main anchor text for the 8- 10 week Informative Unit. The author did an incredible job of reporting her first-hand experiences (she just happened to be in Thailand visiting family as events unraveled) and meticulous follow-up research and interviews to create a comprehensive retelling of the "most ambitious cave rescue in history" for young readers. The layout provides excellent examples of text features, text structure, topic-driven vocabulary, an extensive bibliography, and an audio version of the text - all of which will support our unit learning objectives.
