This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am an instruction coach at my school and we serve emergent English and Spanish language learners and support their journey in becoming strong readers and writers of the language of instruction in class. This project will provide all sixth grade students with a copy of our central text for the start of the school year: Pan de la guerra (The Breadwinner) by Deborah Ellis.
At our school, the sixth graders are an energetic group of bilingual students.
Many were born in Boston, while others have come to us from other countries. Some grew up speaking Spanish and English, while others have learned one of those languages with us. Last week, we realized we did not have enough copies of our central text for students to read in class and take home.
The Breadwinner provides a window for students into the Afgan culture under Taliban rule. Although written many years ago, it is still relevant today. It is a story that tackles gender roles, the oppression of women, and the suppression of free speech. And yet, the story centralized the themes of hope and resistance. For our students, The Breadwinner is a culturally responsible book that will hook students into reading and build their literacy skills in Spanish.
