Engaging Graphic Novels

Help me give my students engaging graphic novel series like the Ms. Marvel series or 5 Worlds that get even the most reluctant readers in the "reading zone."

My Students

I work in a high poverty urban school with students from a variety of racial, ethnic, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. We serve students from Pre K-8 so families can send all of their students to the same school for as long as possible. We also provide many social services for students and their families to ensure basic needs are met so students are ready to learn. Programs like free weekend food for families, free school supplies and winter clothing, free mental health counseling for students, and more are some examples.

My Project

All students deserve access to books that engage them and books they can read. Right now, many of my students are reluctant readers and English learners that rely on the visual supports of a picture book but feel embarrassed reading something that looks childish.

Not only are these books highly visual, but they look grown-up and reflect characters and issues my 5th and 6th graders connect with. Some students have fallen in love with a series but we don't have the next book and they are desperate to read it!
