Engaging Geode Lesson

Help me give my students Break Your Own Geodes kits and hammers for a truly fun hands-on experience while learning about geodes in our Earth Science Unit.

My Project

This engaging, hands-on lesson will allow students to see first-hand what geodes are and be able to keep a piece of the lesson for future review in our unit. My plan with this project is to give the students something not only intriguing to complete (breaking open geodes!) but also something tangible that they are able to take home with them once the lesson is over.

Breaking open the geodes will be something that they will remember whenever I reference this project.

However, the lesson does not end with just breaking open these rocks. It will help transition into a claim, evidence, and reasoning (CER) response for the unit.

I plan to make this project larger than just smashing rocks and looking at geodes. After the hard work of smashing, the students will then have to write a CER response. The students will need to answer this question: Are crystal caves and geodes the same thing? The students will have previous knowledge talking about crystal caves in class leading up to this project, and, once they have been given the information with the geode project, they will have to answer the question regarding whether or not they believe crystal caves and geodes are the same thing.

Once students have answered that question, they will have to give 2 to 3 pieces of evidence to back up their claims. Then, they will have to explain how their evidence relates to their claim.
