My Students
My kindergarten students are a diverse group of active, happy, and eager kids! I teach in a classroom where half of the day's instruction is in English and the other half of the day's instruction is in Spanish. My students are a 50/50 mix of native English and native Spanish speakers. The student population consists of 42% English language learners and 57% of students from low income families. We are a kindergarten through second grade school and have about five hundred students. Our diverse students love to learn!
My Project
In kindergarten, it is crucial to get students hooked on reading. Many students at my school do not have access to books at home. Often times, their first interactions with reading happen in kindergarten.
Providing students with book to bring home will get them excited about reading.
I would like to provide my students with books to take home and keep so they can start a library of their own at home. This will give both students and parents the chance to share books with each other and create a culture of love for books at home and school.
Every year, I meet with parents before the school year starts. I provide them with tools that they can use at home to support their child's learning. I would love to be able to give parents real books for them and their child to practice and read at home.
