Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our middle school is a Title I school with over 80% of its students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Over the last four years, I have been blessed to teach an elective course called AVID.

In AVID, we prepare students for rigorous curriculum that they will encounter in advanced courses as well as help them build skills for college and to be successful in future careers.

My students come from diverse backgrounds, and most of them will be first generation college students. They are driven, hard workers that truly want to learn.

My Project

PowerMyLearning is a unique way for the learning that happens at school to be brought to our students' homes and engage families in the learning process.

As an AVID teacher, I am constantly looking for family engagement opportunities.

PowerMyLearning empowers student learning and makes families active learners. Teachers are able to make playlists for families. These playlists are sent directly to the students' parents. When students get home, the students become their parents' teachers. According to the PowerMyLearning website, students in PowerMyLearning partner schools increase mastery and ownership of learning, and PowerMyLearning partner schools outperformed comparison schools in math proficiency each year.

I would love to bring this experience to my students and their families so that parents can be active participants in the learning process. I would like to use this opportunity to pilot this program with a few teachers at my school so that we could potentially bring it schoolwide next year.
