My Students

I have six students in a K-2 autism classroom. Most of my students have limited verbal skills and do not communicate much on their own. They have varying levels of academic skills and the majority are working on learning basic skills, as well as communication and social skills.

We have a structured routine throughout the day with many hands-on and independent activities.

We have a morning routine that students look forward to every day; independent work time where students practice working by themselves on skills they have mastered; group time to work on academic skills and writing; storytime​ to work on comprehension, math, science and art time where we create creative and colorful projects using construction paper and following picture directions. They have made so much progress so far this year with academic, social, and communication skills.

My Project

Several years ago I started a workshop for parents at my school called the Make and Take Workshop. There was a need for my students to have more activities at home and I wanted families to have the opportunity to help create activities they can use at home. This has continued over the years with a few parents taking advantage of the opportunity. In my classroom we use many materials throughout the day that I have spent time making and now parents have the chance to make the same materials to practice learning academic, communication, social and play skills at home.

Parents are very excited to get involved in creating activities and building relationships with teachers and staff in the autism classrooms at my school through the Make and Take Workshop.

This year I want more parents to be able to attend the workshop so that they can have more activities for their child to work on at home. I am going to survey all parents to get the best date and time that works for everyone to increase parent involvement in the creation of activities for their child. Teachers and staff will help create activities with the parents and also make sure every child has something to take home even if their parent cannot make it.

In my classroom we do homework a little differently and focus on engaging families together in activities. Homework is focused on life skills so they complete a chore together, read books together and complete a fun activity together. This project will allow students to take home games and a book to keep at home. These games and book will be activities they can complete with their parent and record on homework assignments. All activities will build family engagement and help students progress.
