My Project
As an educator in a highly diverse ENL (English as a New Language) classroom in Flushing, Queens, I am committed to fostering not only language development but also essential life skills like financial literacy. My students, many of whom are newcomers to the U.S., face unique challenges as they navigate both language acquisition and understanding key concepts like budgeting, saving, and financial planning. I am requesting a Cricut machine to enhance our financial literacy curriculum through hands-on, creative projects that will make these abstract concepts come to life.
The Cricut will allow students to create visually appealing projects that connect to financial literacy concepts.
From designing and printing their own classroom currency to budgeting charts and saving trackers, students will actively engage in learning through personalized creations. This tactile approach will help my students, especially those with limited English proficiency, to better understand and retain financial literacy principles by giving them a visual and interactive way to learn.
Flushing is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in New York City, and my classroom reflects that diversity. Most of my students are ENL learners from various cultural backgrounds, and many are from low-income families. Language barriers can make abstract concepts like money management difficult to understand, but hands-on activities with clear visual aids will bridge this gap.
The Cricut machine will allow us to create engaging, culturally relevant projects that connect financial literacy to my students’ everyday lives. Whether creating budgeting boards, designing saving jars, or personalizing goal-setting charts, the possibilities are endless for integrating creativity with essential financial skills.
