Engaging Energy Loss Head On and Envisioning Creative Solutions

Help me give my students the chance to see energy inefficiency in action by using the thermal camera to see the problem and use the laptop to find creative ways to solve the problems the camera reveals.

My Students

My socially/environmentally conscious gifted students are learning virtually during this year. I noticed a number of my students layering their clothes. Most home thermostats are set to drop lower during the day when kids are typically in school and not at home. Efficiency is something I teach by showing the parallels between energy efficiency and making the best use of your time.

With that simple conversation, this project was born to study our energy usage patterns and to determine how effective cost-saving measures such as insulation and sealing points of heat loss are really a smart investment.

My Project

With a thermal camera, students can use the school building (built almost 100 years ago) to see how and where heat escapes. By studying the thermodynamics of heat loss and heat transfer students can suggest ways to improve our own building to prevent heat loss. With these materials, we can see how heat is either retained or exhausted by a structure.

Many virtual learning students are bundling up during these cold winter days and having the ability to partner and brainstorm with other students will allow them to create a better understanding of what they can each do at home to make their home to conserve heat.

Lessons learned from these experiments can directly translate to ideas to try at home to solve energy loss issues and save money at home.

The scope of this project can be easily transferred to other applications around the school to assist in answering other probing questions like the following: How does the compost pile work? How can garden creatures survive in winter? How hot is the playground in August? By allowing students to ask and answer questions like this, they grow up being constantly curious and will undoubtedly help shape tomorrow's technology and innovation.
