Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I teach reading intervention at a middle school, and I would like to purchase a class subscription of Junior Scholastic magazine for my students to use in class. Students are placed in intervention classes when they have not been successful in the state standardized tests. Students in my class read below grade level, and it is my job to help close the gap and get them as close to their grade level as possible during the school year. In addition to their usual reading class, students are also placed in my class for extra practice. In addition, my school has a large population of English learners. Classes are smaller, and skills are targeted.

My district provides me with a resource to help my students that struggle with reading, but I would like to supplement the resource with a class subscription to Junior Scholastic magazine.

The subscription comes with lessons, quizzes, and videos that help the students develop the skills they need on the state test.

I believe adding this resource, which will be available to my students in both digital and print form, to my classroom will provide highly motivating material for my students to read. I have used this resource in the past with success. When I've used this resource, students have enjoyed reading and discussing current events that affect their daily lives. The material is well-researched and up to date. It helps students become comfortable discussing topics they see online and on the news.

I am confident that my students would love to get this resource funded. I have already used free articles and quizzes from Junior Scholastic, and students have expressed it is something that would like to do more often.
