My students are curious and voracious learners. They come to school every day buoyed by a love for learning. Every day, they teach me to look at life and learning in new ways. They are constantly asking "why?" and "what if?" about things I would never have thought about. Their inquisitiveness inspires me to be the best teacher I can be.
I have the privilege of working at a diverse school with students from all walks of life.
We have students from all socio- economic levels; ethnicities and ability levels. My school is a Title 1, with Learning Immersion and Gifted and Talented magnet programs. The diversity at our school provides our students with the opportunities to build relationships with and learn from people of all different backgrounds. Through the diversity of our school and classroom, my students are able to construct new understandings of others' cultures and to develop empathy and acceptance of our differences. My students love learning and support one another in ways which promote their dreams. When I look at my students, I have hope for a future in which, diversity is welcomed, accepted and celebrated.
My Project
Have you ever watched a first grader? They are in constant motion from the tips of their toes to the top of their heads. Something is always moving. My first graders are active and tactile learners who would benefit from learning through hands-on activities. The seated peddlers, sand and hands-on games will help my students to learn by engaging all of their senses. Some of these materials will not directly teach my students new skills, but they will help prime my students for learning in all content areas and with many daily living skills. For example, the noise canceling headphones are particularly helpful for students who are easily distracted. They will help those students to block out the noise that comes with engaged learning so they can concentrate on learning.
The donations for this project will improve my students' learning because both their minds and bodies will be engaged as they develop new understandings through hands-on activities.
In addition, students can become advocates for their own learning by using materials that address their own specific sensory needs as learners. I am looking forward to engaging my students in learning which addresses the needs of the whole child!
