Engaging Books on Ecosystems & Sustainability

Help me give my students engaging books to read as we learn about ecosystems, the transfer of energy & matter, and sustainability. This book collection contains a wide variety of reading levels to support all my developing readers.

My Students

This is a 5th grade special education inclusion classroom, about 1/3 of the students in my class have individualized education plans due to learning differences. We are a Title 1 school, so most of our students receive free/reduced lunch due to low income. In addition, many students struggle with the effects of trauma as a result of being exposed to drugs or violence.

I have high standards for students and create structured routines that help students succeed.

My goal is to provide students with social, emotional and physical supports so that their brains can be ready for rigorous learning. This includes daily mindfulness, teaching respectful communication skills, self regulation strategies and allowing for alternative seating, physical movement and brain breaks. My students are eager to learn and happy to be a part of a caring classroom community.

Our school's focus is reading improvement, as our students are struggling readers. In order to support a passion for reading, I want to have a classroom library that engages students.

Your support is greatly appreciated.

My Project

I have selected both fiction and nonfiction books for students to read as we explore ecosystems, food chains, transfer of energy, human impacts and sustainability. These books will be used during our self selected reading time to support engagement and schema throughout this unit of study.

My students will love reading these highly engaging books that are at different reading levels to support all my developing readers.

My classroom consists of students reading levels that range from 1st grade to 7th grade. The graphic novels, picture books, fiction and nonfiction with a variety of reading difficulties will offer something for all students.

The Fun Jungle books by Stuart Gibbs are fiction stories relating to human impacts. The graphic novels teach 5th grade science concepts in a fun comic book style. The Who Would Win books provide facts on animals from different ecosystems. The picture books teach about human impacts, earth systems and highlight an inspiring woman ecologist.

Thank you for supporting my low-income students become strong readers with relevant and interesting books to read.
