We start our day by engaging in Silent Sustained reading; however when students do not have books of interest, they are often distracted and sometimes disruptive. We then have ELA, where I focus on building my students ability to deepen their understanding of texts.
I am a Grade 4 Special Education Teacher in an integrated classroom which is half General Ed.
and half Special Ed. Currently many of my students struggle to attend to limited selection of books we have available in the classroom. A number of my students have ADHD, causing them only to focus on tasks of interest. I also have some English Language Learner in my class who are reading on a early first grade level and require books on their level.
My Project
A couple months ago I borrowed some books from the Public Library including Dork Diaries and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. My students all wanted to read them and for the first time were really beginning to enjoy reading. My students would benefit greatly by having access to these engaging books. Students will be able to answer text dependent questions about the stories they read. Students can share with each other events in a series they are reading.
My students would benefit greatly by having access to these engaging books.
Stories likes these will allow them to practice their reading skills and grow academically. Many of my students come from low income homes and do not have their own books at home. These books will foster a love of reading in my students which is so much needed. Access to this reading material will foster growth in literacy.
