Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My class is the most inquisitive, earnest and compassionate group of 5th graders. Almost half of my class are ELL students and 3 of them have immigrated to the US within the last year from places like Guatemala, Mexico and Haiti.
Most students encounter barriers that potentially keep them from feeling successful in the classroom.
For students who have recently immigrated to this country, or for those who come from a home where the primary language is not the same as what they receive instruction in during the school day, these barriers are dramatically compounded and can often seem insurmountable. These students often feel as if they are watching from the outside and are often too intimidated to feel comfortable participating in traditional academic lessons or group work.
My goal is to create a learning environment that allows all of my students, especially my recently migrated or limited English students, to feel safe, empowered and to feel as if they are able to actively participate in learning activities.
Using the Boogie Boards as an alternative to traditional whiteboards instantly increases students engagement. ELL students often struggle putting their thoughts into words when they are still learning the language. The boards will provide students with an opportunity to draw pictures or models to communicate their thinking and share it effectively; not only with me, but also with their peers.
By providing a variety of Lakeshore math “games” for students to use during center rotations will allow my ELL students to practice the skills we are learning in a fun and less intimidating method. Game play also provides them with increased opportunities to practice their conversational English and build relationships with their peers.
