Engaging All Learners with Historical Graphic Novels!
Help me give my students an opportunity to learn about important historical events through non-fiction graphic novels, with stories that will enrich my curriculum and provide students with a screen-free, content-related activity when they finish classwork early.

My Project
I teach 9th-grade social studies, and it can be hard for young people to connect with and care about historic events and people when it's all just names and dates. The best days are when a student really starts to understand what the past was like for the people who lived through it. Project-based learning and simulation activities help them get to this place, but oftentimes a memoir or well-written first-hand narrative will also spark this kind of connection. Many of the students I work with struggle with reading, either due to diagnosed learning differences or lack of exposure, and graphic novels are a great way to engage them in reading about and comprehending concepts and information on a deeper level.
With a classroom library of high-quality non-fiction graphic novels, students will have windows into the experiences of people around the world and across time.
This collection will also be an excellent tool for managing classroom focus; when a student finishes assigned classwork early, the routine will be that they select a book from he shelf to quietly read, reducing distraction for other students and increasing students' exposure to a variety of windows into history!
