Engaging Activities for Learning Centers and Choice Time
Help me give my students materials to use in centers in the library. These centers include STEM activities, creative building challenges, writing activities, and cooperative, interactive tasks and games.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I get to teach in my elementary school's library, where I see students kindergarten through sixth grade. Library class is a time to engage students with reading, of course, but also to offer experiences with being creative and solving problems. To do that, students have centers, or Choice Time. They decide what activity to work on and who to work with. These are self-directed activities and challenges.
Having excellent materials to choose from allows students to discover what they enjoy and challenge themselves to try something new.
For example, they might learn about building simple circuits using Snap Circuits, or design and build a house for a book character using paper and craft supplies. They may explore a rock collection, leaves, and other items using a magnifying glass, or they could choose to create a shadowscape using blocks and a flashlight. They might become a city planner and put together a community using train tracks and blocks. No matter what they choose, they will be thinking, problem solving, and working together.
