Engaging 8th Graders in Exciting Framework Labs- 2011
My students need microscopes, slides, prisms, periodic table, iron filings, heredity kits, stream table, light bulbs, wire, magnets, plaster of paris and much, much more.
For my students to explain, elaborate, and evaluate concepts effectively, I feel they need to be engaged and exploring. The frameworks are the springboard learning activities that take place in my classroom. $500 would go along way in pushing my student’s interest and learning beyond the textbook.
The more my students experience hands-on inquiry activities, the more in-depth their learning will become.
My 8th grade scientists consist of 53 students in a high poverty area. This talented group of kids is made up of boys, girls, resource, GT, and the economically disadvantaged. Students work in team solving scientific investigations. All students are actively engaged and eager to participate.
My Project
The inquiry activities that this project would provide for this school year include the following:
Life science activities include Pond Water Research, Fossil Record Findings, My Parents Gave Me, What: a study about genetics, heredity & the Punnett square, & Classifying Single-cell Organisms. I am requesting microscopes, slides, heredity kits, & plaster of paris.
Physical science activities include Electromagnets Madness, Refraction of Light, The Atom Family Tree: a study about atoms & elements, & Let the Magnetic Force be with you. I am requesting prisms, periodic table, iron filings, light bulbs, wire, & magnets.
Earth science activities include Leveling the Landforms: a study of topographical maps, & The Motion of Erosion. I am requesting a stream table, & plaster of paris.
It is proven that students have greater understanding and retain more learning by doing and that is what my classroom is all about.
This is my first year in this position and many science materials need to be replaced, acquired, and built upon. This is an excellent opportunity to make a difference in my students’ life. Helping this project would make a big impact on the science education of my students!
