My Students

My diverse group of fifth grade students have one foot firmly planted in childhood, as they tentatively place another into their futures. The more I can actively engage them, the more they see education as an important step in the paths they are taking. Junior high and high school are right around the corner, and we know sparking an interest early is important. Having the right materials to support their active learning and engagement is a critical part of that process.

My Project

The U.S. Independence, A Primary Source History, outlines our countries fight for independence in a way that is easy to understand and makes students really think. Fifth grade is their first introduction to the birth of our country. I am excited about reading this great resource in our small guided reading groups.

The Thief (A Newbery Honor Book) and The Mysterious Benedict Society represent the very best literature has to offer, appealing to to the interests of both my male and female readers, which isn't always easy to do.

They are both engaging and adventurous, with heroes and heroins alike. My students will come to love these classics as we read and discuss them as a class.
