This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher at a school that's in its third year as a program improvement school. Our school has a high population of English Language learner students and most students come from low income families.
In order to help these students progress at their pace and at the same time meet grade level standards, I spend much of my day differentiating instruction. The most crucial time for this is IWT (independent work time). During this time, students work independently in centers while I pull leveled groups to read with them with appropriate texts.
As a second year teacher, I spent most of my time off (vacation, afternoons) creating activities for them to stay engaged in during this IWT. However, some of these materials that I've spent much time making have lost some pieces or have gotten old.
Now, with a little more experience, I realize that my time is better spent planning for my classroom instruction than making center games. Therefore, I would appreciate any help in purchasing games and activities to create meaningful, educational experiences during IWT.
My students will greatly appreciate these hands-on learning experiences to enhance their academic skills. They will interact with these manipulatives every day on a rotating basis while I meet with small groups of students. They will therefore be engaged in meaningful learning while I meet individuals' needs.
