My Project
The specific items I'm requesting, a Sony PlayStation 5 console and controllers, with make a difference in student learning by providing tools to enhance our current game programming courses, help establish an PS5 eSports team, and develop an eSports course. Although we have a game programming course in Unity, and are developing an eSports course as well--we do not have the proper equipment to help students learn. In order to sustain our current game programming course, and develop an eSports class, we need actual gaming consoles.
The goal of this project is to provide our game programming and eSports students with a PS5 console to serve as a design reference, as well as pathway into STEM.
It is also our goal to provide students with something FUN and ENGAGING in STEM, and encourage female students to explore STEM. Post-Covid, we have noticed a drop in Computer Science and STEM enrollment at our school, and throughout our district. We have purposely established a game programming course to address this problem, but that hasn't been enough. This semester, we have created an eSports team for the first time in school history, and plan on extending this momentum into a full-fledged eSports course. By doing so, we hope to help students explore STEM and Computer Science concepts in a fun and engaging manner.
What makes our students special is diversity, and the community we live in. My high school is a 35% minority population with 17.4% Hispanic. We are a very mobile military community, with students coming and going from all over the world. Like other districts, our district sits at 60% (or lower) in both Math and Science. With eSports, we are offering a creative approach to an age-old struggle in schools trying to engage kids in STEM.
