This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are highly engaged and love the hands-on, project-based nature of my engineering classes. We are a Title I school with 76.9% of our student population getting free and reduced lunch. With the school closure, the engagement in my classes has dropped significantly. A school survey sent out to our students revealed the reasons. Students were stressed, bored, and unmotivated. The transition from face-to-face to distance learning took a toll on our students who relied on the connection that they have with their teachers and peers. However, distance learning is here to stay, and I need to prepare myself and students.

The good news is there were students who thrived in this new environment.

This year, I tried two models of distance learning - one where I sent materials home and the other one completely online. Based on feedback from my students, the key that made both models work was the instructional videos I made using my laptop and my smartphone camera. The students were able to hear and see me; as well as pause, rewind and replay! I'd like to produce more high-quality instructional videos for my students (and potentially other students outside of my school).

My Project

There's a significant chance that the new normal for our schools next year will either be a hybrid of face-to-face and distance learning or 100% distance learning.

The HoverCam Ultra 10 wireless document Camera will help me create high-quality, engaging videos for my students.

Imagine sending home project materials with a piece of paper instruction versus a video of me with clear step-by-step instructions that students can pause, rewind, and replay.

During synchronous online sessions with students, I can easily write or sketch on a piece of paper that students can clearly see with the help of the HoverCam.

During face-to-face instruction, the wireless capability of this document camera will enable me to roam freely around the classroom and project to the screen from wherever I am. This feature solves social distancing issues when students need to gather around me for a demonstration.
