My Project
Over the course of the school year so far, all of my 7th and 8th grade reading intervention classes have faced the same issue, with the same mantra: "But sir, I don't LIKE reading!" Students are uninterested or unconfident in their reading abilities, and helping them select a book to read, stick with that book, and finish it has been a CHALLENGE.
Most kids ask for the same kinds of books: comics, and books about kids like them.
Even though we have a wonderful school library, the hundreds of books in that large space can create too daunting a selection for some readers, and this can lead to stagnation, or distraction.
By building out my classroom library with a wider variety of texts, especially graphic novels about young people, and especially stories which I myself have read and can personally recommend, I am confident I can get many more students to buy into reading, and begin to develop a healthy, lifelong reading habit.
This will enrich students' experience in my classroom by maximizing choice without overwhelming them, and will in turn enrich their overall academic experience by authentically building their foundational literacy skills.
Further, allowing students the autonomy of choice, and ensuring they see themselves reflected in the young people featured across these texts, will bolster their sense of belonging, creating an even safer, more open social emotional classroom climate.
