Engage my readers in fun, recently published literature! Have you ever judged a book by its cover? Most of us have, and young people are no exception. My students need appealing choices in Reading Workshop so that they will stay engaged and motivated.
My 4th graders attend a charter school that believes in small class-sizes and small-group instruction.
This charter school is very disciplined and intent on getting kids into college. My students spend over an hour every day reading books that are self-selected based on interest and reading level. Many of my students come from low-income homes in Illinois and some are growing up in challenging situations. These young boys and girls are enthusiastic and driven young learners!
My Project
Each day, my 4th grade students read for 60 minutes during Reading Workshop. They get to choose their own books from our classroom library. Some of the books in the library are older and look unappealing to young readers. Young people are very quick to judge a book by its cover. Tapping into the interests of young readers is essential to engaging them. Reluctant readers are very particular and difficult to please. The classroom library must include a variety of fun and recent books to appeal to the interests of these young people. The books in this project are fun and recently published. They cover a variety of genres including fantasy, realistic fiction, mystery, adventure, poetry, and nonfiction.
There are numerous benefits to reading independently including building fluency, increasing vocabulary, and providing an opportunity for students to practice various reading strategies.
Interesting and appealing books will engaged reluctant readers. Keep my students interested in reading by providing them with fun and recent children's literature!
