Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If a picture is worth a thousand words, imagine the impact of a thousand drawings! Many of our students are learning English as a second language and would greatly benefit from the chance to read a graphic novel in our English class, combining images with text for a meaningful reading experience.

Our school population is very diverse, including Latino, Asian and African American students.

We have a large English Learner and immigrant population. Our inner-city high school is located in California. Our students are very creative, have a deep appreciation of art and love comics and graphic novels!

My Project

Each year, our 10th grade students complete a year-long "Why War?" unit, connecting their learning from different courses. In English class, I expose my students to a variety of articles, research, film and stories. Unfortunately, we have a very limited selection of novels at our school, very few of which are relevant to our students' lives or manageable for our students to read. Using a graphic novel in our class will not only boost students' love for reading, but allow us to engage in the elements of literature through a deeper level of understanding. Marjane Satrapi's graphic novel 'Persepolis' is not only educational, but beautifully drawn and a blast to read. This book explores the Islamic Revolution through the eyes of a young Iranian girl struggling to understand the changing world around her.

By bringing 'Persepolis' to our classroom, you are creating a truly cross-cultural experience for our students.

This is a unique opportunity to expand our students' perspectives by exposing them to different religions and ways of life, as well as a different genre of literature. Please help bring the joy of literary comics to our school and give our students a reading experience they will treasure!
