Help me give my students the critical social-emotional support through various SEL resources. These resources support our comprehensive school counseling program, as we promote success and achievement for all students by empowering their social and emotional needs.

My Project

Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) is an educational concept that helps students gain life skills beyond academics. SEL helps kids to identify their feelings, understand and communicate with others, build healthy relationships and make positive choices. As a school counselor, it is imperative to foster SEL in school, which helps them learn valuable life skills and enhances academic skills.

For instance, SEL teaches kids ways to improve their: empathy, emotion regulation, problem-solving skills, decision-making skills, communication skills, relationships with friends and family, self-knowledge, and self-control.

Our Comprehensive School Counseling Program integrates SEL through all of our services: individual counseling, small groups, classroom lessons, parent/guardian support, teacher collaboration and school-wide initiatives. The journals will be utilized during our individual and small group lessons to help our students have a private space to reflect through guided prompts. The coloring books, stress balls, sensory stickers and fidgets are highly requested by the students, as it's strategy that help students self-regulate in class and through small groups.

I plan to make copies of the color pages and DBT pages, then create SEL folders for students that expand our SEL curriculum. We will also utilize the DBT and Creative Coping Skills workbooks to deliver classroom lessons, lunch and learns, individual and small group counseling sessions. Lastly, we would also like to promote SEL throughout the building with the empowering mindfulness and diversity posters.

Our school counseling program vision and mission is to engage and empower our students with resources to overcome obstacles that interfere with learning and success. We are a Title I school and these resources will help us to support our students with their social and emotional development.
