My students need K'Nex kits for physical models of alternative energy sources in order to understand how electricity is produced, since they have a hard time visualizing the processes.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Alternative energy is all over the headlines, but what does it mean?
My students are 60 of the sweetest (and smartest!) sixth-graders around NYC.
I teach Math and Science in a high-poverty area where most students are immigrants or children of immigrants. They are often burdened with many responsibilities besides school. They are the official babysitters of their siblings or family translators. Our school takes pride in using both English and the students' native language (Spanish) for instruction. It is a pretty small school with just two classes per grade. Our goal is to encourage curiosity, pride, academic excellence, and proficient bilingualism.
My Project
Every year, when we learn about alternative energy resources, I find that students have a hard time understanding the dynamics of hydro-power, wind power, solar power, and other sources of electricity. I always wish I could take them to an energy plant or somehow make the unit more visual. Last year, I included a video into the unit, and although it helped, they still had many misunderstandings about the actual 'generating electricity' part. These models will provide a visual and tactile way for students to explore the mechanics of energy transformation that lead to generating electricity.
I would split the classes up into groups who would be responsible for assembling each model, researching the energy source, and presenting to the class in a sort of 'energy fair'. We would even invite other students to see our models and teach them about alternative energy.
My students are the scientists and engineers of the future.
By providing them with these models, you can help ignite the curiosity that will drive their inventions and innovations. They will also become better citizens by understanding that we have to become educated about the topics that are in the headlines in order to make better decisions. They can become critical thinkers who don't just accept what is offered to them, but seek their own answers and opportunities.
