Hello! I teach Kindergarten at an urban public school in Illinois. We have 34 Kindergartners in our classroom. Almost all of my students speak English as their second language and most are bilingual in English and Spanish. All of my students receive a free breakfast, that we eat in the classroom each morning, and most students qualify for free or reduced lunch.
We are a small pre-K through 8th grade school. Our building was formerly a parochial school and is attached to a church building. Our school has no playground or gymnasium and no time for recess in the school day schedule. We use a large hall in the church basement as our gym. Sports equipment and play equipment are in short supply. Kindergartners are energetic youngsters who need time to be active during the school day! I believe that physical education is a vital part of any education. Students need to learn the joy of exercising. Students can also learn valuable teamwork, cooperation and social skills while playing games and exercising together. During free periods in the gym and when the weather permits, I try to give my Kindergartners time to play teamwork games in the gym or parking lot.
My Kindergartners need games and gym equipment! You can help my Kindergartners by providing equipment that will help them develop gross motor skills and teamwork skills while learning to enjoy exercising.
In this proposal I am asking for a parachute, dodge balls, rhythm streamers, sidewalk chalk, jump ropes, hula hoops, and a whistle for myself! This equipment will allow my Kindergartners to enjoy exercising, build teamwork and social skills and get their energy out.
