My Students
I have worked to secure one of the first one-to-one learning environments in my school. While my students are learning to investigate history and community problems, they are also learning how to be smart digital learners and consumers. We learn how to question and think smart about the world.
I work in a high poverty school-64% of my students live in poverty.
In addition, 15% are kids who have to overcome disability; 4% are English Learners. There are a number of my students who run the danger of falling dangerously behind in life because they either have no or limited access to technology outside of the school day. Even if they do have access, they come with limited skills on how to decide what is information they can trust and how to feel like a confident risk taker in a computing learning environment. I have secured a one to one learning environment, but it is a challenge for many of my kids. Most have trouble concentrating and staying on focus-there are lots of distractions on the Web! Staying in a seat for 40+ minutes is a struggle. They need active learning environments, where they can move their muscles to help their brain achieve peak performance, to get restlessness and nervous energy out so they can focus on becoming knowledge creators in a digital world.
My Project
As a teacher, I am always looking for ways to get more bang for my buck with students. The majority of my students live with the challenges that living in poverty creates for them: 1. Higher obesity rates due to limited food choices. 2. Higher rates of attention/focus problems (the problems of a life in poverty weigh on my students every day). 3. Lagging behind in knowledge, especially digital tools ("The Digital Divide"). 4. Short on academic confidence and risk taking (due to all of the above). My students need a set of Bouncy Bands . There has been lots of research on the benefits of Active Sitting increasing student focus and comprehension. My kids desperately need confidence and help in this arena. I have purchased many things on my own to help them achieve-my own microphone system, headphones for all kids, securing a one to one classroom for them I strongly feel if I just secure these active sitting tools, it will help the kids get the exercise and focus they need.
Our world is changing.
Learning to read, write and do math is no longer enough. Our kids need to know how to navigate a world that puts them in touch with people around the world. They need to learn how to be a part of that world community. They are required in school to be in more academic instruction than ever before. What hasn't changed is that kids need exercise to be happy and successful. These chairs would provide the best of both worlds to help ensure a happy future.
