My fifth grade students are FUN and very passionate about life, friendships, and learning. Fifth grade is a unique age for students because they are building new relationships, learning to cope with the upcoming change of middle school, and understanding what it means to be a responsible teenager.
The students in our classroom are working to make positive choices as young adults, including taking a more active role as independent readers.
Rather than being despondent about their in-class book selection, this distinct group is being proactive and doing something about their issue. This is who they are, people who set their sights on a goal and bring those objectives and aspirations to fruition. I cannot say I have seen this drive out of many 10-11 year olds, and am truly impressed with the level of enthusiasm and persistence they have shown to get their hands on a good book. These students are driven, and with the proper tools in their hands can reach unbelievable heights in their learning of both who they are and the world around them.
My Project
In today's world, our children are drawn to images more than ever, and with new graphic novels, we can help them grow their skills for reading, analyzing images and following story lines. You might be thinking, how can old school comic books advance a child's reading skills? These are anything but comic books. With topics that range from classics, like Call of the Wild, to middle school issues they are about to face, the in-depth stories make reading and learning fun.
With your help, we can purchase a set of inspiring graphic novels to build our diverse selection of reading material.
The unique set of books we found has been hand-selected by our children. The goal of this fundraising project is to empower these students to make good choices on what they read and learn so that they can carry their love of learning through fifth grade and beyond.
