My Students

My school is in an urban setting & recently increased to over 50% English language learners (ELLs).
94% are economically disadvantaged and do not have access to technology. It is a community of immigrants and refugees that love our city and want to improve the future for themselves and their children through hard work and education. They believe in the American dream & I do too!
I am an ELL teacher & I co-teach in a first grade classroom with beginning ELLs from 8 different language groups. During our recent back to school night our parents (through interpreters) expressed their frustration at not being able to support their children at home with homework, reading, and sight word work. The parents are desperate to help, but need the right tools in order to do so! We have rigorous standards for our students and they must be able to complete homework and practice English sight words and books at home in order to improve and succeed in first grade!
My Project
The Samsung tablet will give them the audio and visual support in English that my students need! The protective cases will insure that if little hands drop them, they won't break. They will use the tablet at school and at home to practice their sight words and read the books that we practice during language arts. This tablet will be the link between what we have taught during the school day and what they can continue to practice and reinforce at home. This support will dramatically increase their English language proficiency and academic achievement. Without this home and school connection, my English language learners are facing an unfair disadvantage in their educational growth. Parental involvement is key to student success and by working together, the parents will also learn English. I am going to create a simple website that students can connect to easily and practice our classroom literacy skills at home with the tablet.
This tablet will dramatically improve English language acquisition in the classroom!
It is imperative for students to be able to practice sight words and reading books in English at home. I am optimistic that these Samsung tablets will unlock the key to student success through the link they provide between school and the home environment. They will also be an incredible asset in the classroom.
