Endangered Species: Not If We Have Anything To Say About It!

My students need 37 non-fiction books about endangered and threatened species. Every year we do a research report about animals and the impact on earth if they disappear.

My Students

"As children, small creatures endlessly fascinate us; as adults, we can protect them so as to inspire future children," said Les E. Watling, a marine ecologist. We can still fascinate our children, while also inspiring them to take action before it is too late when they are adults.

Our student population is made up of a diverse group of 7th and 8th graders from lower to middle income families.

They have parents who work sometimes two or three jobs but are still dedicated to making sure their child succeeds. When given the opportunities, they take pride in their school and step up to challenges to make our school shine, such as pep assemblies, spirit week, the canned food drive, and Changemaker. Changemaker is a district fundraiser in which each school in the district raises money for the science kits. Despite the fact that our school is one of the few in lower income areas, the students raise more money that any other school in the district through creative and innovative fundraising ideas.

My Project

My students need 37 non-fiction books about endangered and threatened species. The books are filled with photos and information to help students understand aspects about the animals lives such as habitat, feeding, mating and young, endangerment status, and physical description. Pairs of students will choose 1 species to study for our endangered animals reports. They will use these books to collect 50 facts about their chosen animal. Students will then learn how to organize their information in a graphic organizer, then outline, and finally into a complete research report. Along the way, students will read articles about various species as well as action that is being take to protect them. They must also take a stance on the heated issue and defend it based on the information they have learned. This information will be presented to the class in the form of a collective website. Every student group will contribute to the website which will have links to each report. This website will be published on the district-approved site for other students to see and learn fro

The pairs of students working together are independently driven every year.

They need little assistance from me and are genuinely motivated to gather their facts and write their report. In the past years I have checked out books from the public library. The problem has been that I can only check out 20 books for two weeks. This often limits the amount of information I can provide to my students. Combined with the books from the library, these are more than sufficient to research their animal.
