This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are interested in the world around them. They are city kids with a keen interest in learning new things. They love to explore, write, build and read. As the ELD teacher for kindergarten and first grade, I spend my time pushing into classrooms to teach English language learners. We are about to go 100% in person and it's going to be tight quarters in our small classrooms.

My students come from impoverished backgrounds, but they also have strong family ties and parents who want the best for them.

Our school is very large and with the latest state budget cuts, our class will be much larger than normal. This won't stop us from becoming a school family looking out for each other and learning everything we can in these first pivotal years of school.

My Project

This is for our first-grade team to have the supplies needed to teach and explore what a zoo would need to help save an endangered species. The books requested will offer background knowledge of many animals. During the exploration, the requested clay will allow them to make the animals and represent each proper habitat; while researching, they will come up with ideas on how they can help save these endangered animals. Students are exploring books, computers, taking a trip to the actual zoo, and meeting with a zookeeper to design their habitats using clay and paints. At the end of the project, they can speak eloquently about why their design should be the next investment for our local zoo. It's a very impressive project.
