This particular group of kiddos will always stay near and dear to my heart as the ones I had when school went 'online' for the Covid Pandemic, but not just for that, they also happened to be one of my most favorite groups of students I've had in teaching the past ten years.
March in 1st grade is like a Cinderella month, it's a time of magic where students really start to take off and I see celebrations in all subjects as well as giant leaps in growth! So many students begin to really understand reading and it becomes a lot more enjoyable for them. Math all the sudden makes more sense and every day is full of what looks like miracles.
This year was different though, that time together was taken away and instead of being able to see them take off, I had to witness them struggle to learn by themselves in a whole new way. The one thing that has kept us together though is the interactions between us.
My Project
I hope to receive these materials quickly so that I can use them during the last few weeks of school to demonstrate fractions, show how numbers compare with one another, as well as using visuals like Judy clocks for the students to see how time moves and changes.
This year has taught me that CONNECTION is by far more important than CONTENT!
While still using the regular manuals and lessons we would normally use in the classroom as a foundation, it's the students that have shown me just how much they can learn and grow in all sorts of circumstances by using online platforms to connect.
Even having me just demonstrate in front of a camera using various manipulatives, and having conversations with one another, is now where the learning is really happening. Conducting online meetings, having video chats with one another, and teaching lessons online has stretched my thinking and cultivated a whole new way of learning for me, as well as how I want to teach my students.
The relationships I have maintained with them, even through these hard times, has made my love of teaching grow beyond measure and I still am in shock and awe at how these students continue to surprise me and make me proud of them every day with how they motivate each other, support one another, and love the opportunities they get to learn all together even while laving it all online!
My wish is that these new materials excite my students about learning now, as well as throughout the summer! I really want to give them some fun, end of year learning opportunities.
