Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is one of the most important skills, if not the most important skill that a child needs to learn. It's really hard to learn this skill when you have to read while sitting in hard uncomfortable chairs. A pair of beanbag chairs and a few good books would definitely make reading a lot easier.

My students are first graders attending a school located in a low socioeconomic area in Los Angeles.

They are in a dual language class in which they are learning two languages at the same time. There are 9 boys and 10 girls between the ages of 6 and 7. My students are full of energy and are eager to learn new concepts every day. Because of economic hardship many of their parents have two jobs to be able to support their family, often lacking the resources to create a quiet comfortable space for their children to enjoy reading.

My Project

Creating a comfortable reading area for students is as important as finding just right books to read for them. After having to sit in a classroom chair for 5 or more hours a day, my students find it a pain to have to sit there for another 30 minutes to read. Reading becomes just another class task to do. Giving my students some bean bags to sit on can really make it so they want to sit and read. My goal isn't to have the biggest and best reading area but to create a comfortable area for my students to read when they are working on self-selected reading. Providing my students with a comfortable and fun place to read in class will definitely motivate them to grab a book for some independent reading time. A comfortable space encourages people to spend time in it. And spending time reading and responding to literature is exactly what I want my students to do. I strongly believe that a couple of bean bags and a few good books will entice my students to immerse themselves in books.

Please help my students associate comfort and enjoyment with reading with a set of bean bags and a few good books.

As this can help them to turn the negativity often associated with class tasks and learning into something more positive and enjoyable.
