Encouraging Social-Emotional Skills Through Books

My students need literature surrounding social-emotional skills. These books not only teach social-emotional skills such as executive functioning and empathy, they encourage literacy in a fun and relatable way.

My Students

Our school is a high-performing public charter school located on the southeast side of Chicago. This coming school year we will be serving grades K-4, and will be adding one grade level per year until we reach K-8. 89% of our scholars qualify for free and reduced lunch, and 100% of our scholars live in the surrounding community.

The students in our kindergarten classroom are not only students: they are scholars, they are friends, they are dreamers, and they are constantly seeking out opportunities to learn and grow.

We promote growth, achievement, and strength of character within our scholars. Our school believes in the power of each and every scholar to someday change the world.

My Project

Kindergarten is a scary place for so many of the young scholars at our school. Expectations are different, teachers are different, and you don't always get what you want. Because of these reasons, our kindergarteners need books that develop their social-emotional functioning.

These books, such as The Invisible Boy, Clark the Shark, Crabby Pants and My Mouth is a Volcano, span the following topics: executive functioning, decision making, anger management, shyness, making new friendships, and making mistakes.

Not only do these books show the stories of others- they change how our scholars manage and think about themselves.

In addition to read-aloud books, I seek mini-books that scholars can quickly read and create on their own during choice time.
