Encouraging Mathematicians & Scientist w/ Literature & STEM
My students need literature to help understand the lives, impact and contributions that these inventors and scientists have made.

My Students
Twice a month we are learning about a famous inventor or scientist along with how their invention has changed our world. We are incorporating what we learn into research or project based STEM projects that correspond to the invention or contribution the inventor/scientist made.
This year I have 22 diverse students in Mesa, AZ..
One fourth of my students are in special education and receive services to help support them academically. Two of those six students are on the autism spectrum. I got rid of the traditional desks and created pods with trapezoid tables. My students are engaged in meaningful conversations about what we are learning. Gone are the pen and pencil worksheets for rote memorization - we build, create, imagine, construct, problem solve and much more in my class. We use hands on manipulatives that we create or are store bought.
My Project
My students will use the literature to help them in their overall understanding of these important men. We will learn about how math, science and the engineering process helped these men and women create things we use in our everyday life and the contributions their inventions make to our lives. By creating units of study, we will be able to read, write, research and complete STEM projects to us make valuable connections.
My project will make a difference because not all children learn the same.
By creating a STEM classroom and working on projects, all my students have access to the materials, concepts and most of all - they are making connections with what they are learning. It is my goal to do this by introducing my third graders to the world of mathematics and science through literature and STEM activities. I am exposing them to important skills that will be beneficial to them later in life.
