This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how fun it was playing with Legos? K'NEX building sets are even more fun, and they allow kids to learn through exploration. We can't always tell the kids what they must learn. Oftentimes, learning on their own is the best form of education!
Just like all other kids, my students LOVE learning (when we teachers make it worthwhile)!
They work everyday in collaborative groups, sharing amazing strategies and ideas that even adults can't come up with. Our school, whose mission includes bilingualism and social justice, is located in an urban neighborhood.
We are a new pilot school within the school district, allowing us certain autonomies, which allow us to design creative, yet rigorous, curriculum. Historically, most families chose to bus their children about one hour outside of their community in search of better schools. However, ever since the opening of our site, we have been able to celebrate a "homecoming" of sorts, providing families with a quality school that their community deserves.
My Project
Students will be able to imagine and create their own inventions with K'NEX building sets. They can experience the true meaning of scientific exploration by trial and error. They can build models that move and test out their creations. Throughout the process, they would problem solve and utilize spatial reasoning skills. With such rich learning experiences, they would come to love science rather than shy away from it.
Science doesn't have to be confusing and scary.
