This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I teach small group reading intervention to students in grades 1-6, and I also support teachers in using research based practices to support struggling readers in the general education classroom. Many of my students lack the foundational skills needed to read at their grade level, whether due to a learning disability, poor first instruction during the pandemic, or learning a new language. Some students are able to make good progress as soon as they receive the appropriate instruction, while for others my intervention group is a step towards getting them the special education services that they need.
Students who are struggling to read often also need support with motivation and confidence in academic settings.
During our 30 minute sessions, I ask students to work very hard at something that is already very challenging for them. Holding their interest and making it fun and engaging is key. While the materials we use to learn to read are fairly basic- paper, pencils, markers, whiteboards- things like finger puppets, magic wands, and raffle tickets really help to keep students on task and focused on the goal. These materials will get a lot of use from students in my classroom, and the books will be used as a resource to help teachers employ the same types of strategies in their classrooms, positively impacting even more students than I can see in a year.
