Encouraging a Love of Literacy Everywhere

Help me give my students books to help inspire a love of reading within our school community.

My Project

Over my time as a teacher, I have seen students who are very enthusiastic about reading, as well as ones who are more reluctant to read something, whether it be aloud in class or to themselves privately. As teachers we have the important job of helping the reluctant readers perhaps find the "right book" that will pique their interests, as well as continue to challenge and develop the love of reading in the other students.

Many of the students at our school come from very low-income homes with few if any books at home, with many students at our school being English language learners.

My current students wanted to start a book donation opportunity within our school community. Kids would get a chance to grow their libraries at home. Building a "Free Library" would not only help the students in our school be able to have something to read; it also helps the students and community members to motivate kids to read daily- anywhere and everywhere. A "Free Library" encourages students to build in reading time with their families. Strengthening the home-school connection is crucial to student success. The books selected in this project would help get the library started. They offer a wide range of subject matters. With time, the library can expand. With these, the kids can work on not just creativity and even handwriting, but so many other concepts such as parts of speech, reading fluency, and reading accuracy. Thank you for your time and consideration. The kids will gr5 to read about animals, history, inventors, and so much more!
