My Project

Books seriously can change the world, but sadly, at our Title I school, we don't yet have a centralized library. Some teachers have bookshelves filled with great, interesting reads for their students, and I plan to be among those teachers.

If books help us do one thing, it's to develop a sense of empathy.

And in a group of students still suffering from the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, I can think of no better way to foster open-mindedness, curiosity, and interest than to fill my classroom's bookshelves with a bunch of age-appropriate books.

My 5th graders will delight in this carefully curated library of books, and will even be encouraged to "check out" books and take them home. Of course, independent reading time will be given in class, but I'd really like to provide a lovely selection of books the kids feel excited to tear through. I've personally seen how taking on the perspectives of different narrators can change the way we see the world. All I want to do is to share my love of reading, math, and science with the students at our school.
