This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Inquisitive, growing and trying to figure out how they fit into the world, are the one hundred and twenty sixth graders I work with everyday.
Our class motto is "Sixth Grade on Fire; Lead and Inspire!" and our students are working hard to live up to those words.
We are an inner-city middle school in one of the biggest cities in the US, with over ninety percent of students receiving free lunch. Our population is diverse, as are our learning styles.
Most of my students do not have access to a large selection of reading options. Without exposure, they have not been able to figure out what genres they actually do enjoy.
My Project
Encouraging students to pick up books they might actually enjoy is a difficult endeavor. Books with pictures help to make stories easier to visualize. The majority of my students have not had enough experiences to picture the action in some books. Graphics are images they can relate to.
The addition of these ten award-winning TOON graphic novels will be an eye-catching addition to our classroom library.
My sixth grade students are still learning what genres of stories exist, so they are experimenting with what they may, or may not, enjoy reading. Graphic novels help engage with bright pictures, assisting with the comprehension of the plot lines. I look forward to engaging more readers!
